Shortly before midnight on December 3, 2003, young Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan Luna vanishes from his desk in the federal courthouse in downtown Baltimore.

Without explanation he mysteriously drives away from his office in the courthouse, away from his life, embarking on a wildly improbable midnight ride. In his office he leaves behind oddly important, personal items. His laptop. His cell phone. His eyeglasses.

And a bad plea agreement he was unable or unwilling to complete.

The next morning, shortly before dawn, Luna’s body is found face down in a cold stream outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He’s been stabbed thirty-six times, once for every thousand dollars missing from a courthouse safe. His car idles beside him at the side of the murmuring creek. He’s seventy miles from his office, at the far end of a midnight ride that carried him across four states.

In The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna, writer William Keisling reconstructs the last hours in the life of an American public servant. It’s a shocking, true-life, murder mystery whodunit that you’ll never forget.

The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna eBook William Keisling

Considering the recent murder of a policeman who was going to testify on police corruption reminds me of what happened to officer Serpico. Now that some of these Baltimore officers are facing prison time.
I think what happened to Jonathan Luna needs to be reopened and examined thoroughly. The Pennsylvania coroner was even scared to death because he wouldn't change his ruling of murder to suicide.
Also, a 100,000.00 reward for information has gone unclaimed.

The Midnight Ride of Jonathan Luna eBook William Keisling Reviews

Move along, move along. Nothing going on here.

Thomas M. DiBiagio is a former United States Attorney in the state of Maryland. After eight U.S. attorneys were fired by the Bush administration in 2006 for performance-related issues under a clause of the PATRIOT Act, stated in March 2007 that he was ousted because of political pressure over public corruption investigations into the administration of then-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. Investigations involved links between politicians and the D.C. Madam Scandal. Jonathan Luna, an assistant to DiBiagio who was involved in the probe was murdered in 2003.

What would be good to examine would be the subsequent burial of the DC madam case.....and the connected firing of Carol Lam after she delivered subpeonas to Langley. Palfrey was indicted in Vallejo, Lam's office. Also Kontogiannis (whose court records will be sealed for the next 40 years due to "national security").

This case has to be buried. Clearly, there are more important matters in the world than investigating Luna's death. I'm so sorry, but no one will touch this. It's nuclear, and any investigation into this matter would destroy our country completely and utterly. I don't believe this was about money at all, but about something much more sinister. Something unimaginable.

The key events are Luna did not take his glasses or his cellphone with him. Someone must have come to his office and took him there. It's just too strange. Additionally, the missing money. He would not have access to the money. It's evidence in a case. It must have been difficult to show how he would.

Finally, the missing photographs. Multiple times on the turnpike, the cameras were not functioning. It makes no sense. Why would anyone even think of trying to rule his death a suicide? No, something much much more sinister is going on. Something completely outside the box.

I am unsure, but I don't believe he was killed for a case he had investigated, but a case that he was investigating. It had implications that reached very deeply inside Washington. Inside the national security apparatus that was fabricating information.

Years later, Carol Lam began her investigation into certain matters in California, then was inexplicably fired. It led to some very important decision makers in Washington. Are these cases connected? Perhaps.

US assistant attorneys aren't "suicided" without any investigation by the FBI, unless there's a very good reason. By the way, the FBI is offering a reward for any information about Luna's death. Good luck collecting. Oh yeah, one more thing. Both Palfrey and one of her employees committed suicide as a result. That has to be a world record of 3 "suicides" in one case. As I said....if you have any information, good luck collecting that reward. It might be fatal.
Interesting modern update from the crime and corruption-ridden small town milieu that Dashiell Hammett wrote about in Red Harvest, and where the JFK machine found the votes that their man rode into the White House.
I've just started on this, but I must say, it's an incredible story. So very sad that this talented young man came to this end. Even more disturbing is that no one seems to be able to properly investigate this murder. The book is very well written and the author's writing style is very descriptive and easy to follow.
One of the saddest and most horrific books I've ever read. No one is trying to find out who did this to him. He almost made it, found only one hour after he died. Heartbreaking. To think a D.A. Can just disappear and our govt doesn't work hard to shake every tree to find clues. I just wish the author just stayed with this crime, lots of info wasn't necessary. Just Mr. Luna crime is enough.
Whatever happened to Jonathan Luna?

In the late nineties and into 2000 and beyond the core of Baltimore was a cesspool-drug trading and ancillary activities ran rampant and unchecked.Local law enforcement was led by a police commissioner on the take himself to finance his own stable of call girls. Federal law enforcement was compromised by the activities of rogue FBI agents who illegally paid informants, themselves convicted felons, and granted them freedom of movement without monitoring.

Into this cauldron of criminality is inserted a young assistant federal prosecutor who is attempting to try two of Baltimore's leading scuzzbag drug kingpins, Walter Poindexter and Deon Smith. The trial goes badly because of the necessary coverup of the FBI's handling of informant Warren Grace, another scumbag already convicted and in jail. Also involved is the coverup of Poindexter's documented murder of Alvin Jones for allegedly stealing from his stash house. There is also the problem of a missing $36000, evidentiary material stolen from the courtroom, from an earlier trial where Luna was prosecuting. In the Poindexter trial Luna is forced to plea bargain for both defendants but cannot legally file a plea bargain for Poindexter that will omit reference to the drug related murder of Alvin Jones.

Luna disappears from his office at the Baltimore Federal Court at 1140 p.m. the night of December 3, 2003, as he is completing Poindexter's plea bargain. His body is recovered 100 miles away early the next morning in a Pennsylvania stream. The route of Jonathan's ride is documented by EZ pass records, and toll tickets. It is a meandering route through four states that ends near Denver Pa where Jonathan's idling car is found, with "Joey", battered and slashed, under the front end face down in the water. A vicious, premeditated, professional type killing has been perpetrated.

Keisling's account is compelling and informative. One learns more about the unsavory aspects of the drug trade in Baltimore and the equally unsavory activities of the Baltimore Field Office of the FBI than one can stomach. After Luna's death the FBI attempts to deflect by stating inferences about Luna's character, alluding to him as leading a double life.

We may never know what happened to Joey, with the million dollar "Tiger Woods" smile, but there are suspects aplenty. There remains little doubt that his murder was effected by a "bad actor" or "actors" that Jonathan probably knew and trusted.
