Missional Communities (MCs) are a hot topic right now in the church, and many are excited about the potential of MCs to be a vehicle that allows the church to better live out its mission in the world. But if we embrace and implement MCs merely as a new program, they won’t live up to their potential and we’ll be on to the next hot topic in a few months. much deeper issue how we can learn to live our everyday lives as extended families on mission.
We call this reality oikos (“household” in Greek), and that’s actually what this book is about. Think of it like this an MC is a great vehicle, but vehicles are supposed to take you somewhere. The destination the vehicle of MC takes us to is oikos. We believe oikos is something the Spirit of God is doing in this time to restore the church’s ability to function fruitfully in discipleship and mission the way the early church did, publicly living out this is the make-or-break issue for the Western church. We simply will not see God’s dream for
the world come true unless we learn how to function as extended families on mission. And MCs are a great vehicle that helps jump-start that culture-shifting process.We began using MCs over 25 years ago, and have seen both breakthrough and failure. Thisthe Western world in leading, growing, and multiplying MCs.
The great thing is that it isn’t actually that complicated, and God will give us the power to do it. This isn’t a task reserved for church leaders, pastors, or experts—it’s for everyone! The goal is to learn how to function as an extended family on mission. We really believe this is something everyone can learn to do, and this book is about making the first step in that direction.

I love how Breen and the 3DM team have been able to not just repeat once again the principles and insights from previous books; instead, they have made an important contribution to the most practical aspects of the MCs conversation. I truly recommend this work to anyone who is willing to invest time and effort in exploring the potential that MCs have for unleashing common, ordinary believers into the mission of God around their neighborhoods.
When reading this book if you lead an existing church do not shortchange yourself by not reading the appendices. This book is very practical and applicable and the appendices answers question is missing in the book.
One of the best and most practical books on the subject. Recommended for leaders and interns. Full of great principles and practical ideas for implementation.
If you are pastoring an existing church and are looking into starting missional communities, this is a very helpful resource. I consult it regularly and have my MC leaders read it, too. If you aren't familiar with 3dm, I'd recommend starting by reading Leading Kingdom Movements. Also, if at all possible, find a 3dm training event or seminar.
This is another solid book on missional communities by Mike Breen. Starting with a basic outline of what a missional community is (a vehicle to get us to "extended family on mission), to the major components of a missional community, Breen begins to build a foundation from which a leader can effectively lead. After he establishes this, he then moves into what the role of a leader is, outlines common missteps of leaders and MCs, and then addresses common questions (the ever present one being "what do we do with kids?").
Overall, this is a quick, easy read that is chock full of information and advice that will be invaluable to leaders of MCs.
Great book to read when considering house church style movements. Very insightful, practical, and concisely written. Content to me was spot on! Some parts I needed to reread a few times to really understand the concept but I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of investigating what home church movements can look like or be like.
It has some good insights and seems very practical but I don't know if this idea is for everyone. To really see this work well, you have to totally commit to the plan. I don't know that every church is ready to do so.
No one knows Missional Communities quite like Mike Breen and 3DM. This is not another book by those looking on to something happening in Church and trying to explain what they see. Mike helped pioneer Missional Communities to make his church in England one of the largest in Europe. He has been leading and training leaders for MC's for years, and this book is an overview of that training. This is hands-on training from someone who is a practitioner first, and a trainer second.
This book lays out what Missional Communities are, the culture that forms them, practical examples of how they function, and lots of practical tips on how to lead them well. If you're looking for an introduction to Missional Communities, I would look elsewhere. But If you already have a vision for Missional Communities and are looking for the next step in how to actually lead them, this book is for you.
